The demographical change is visible within an increasing shortage of the potential employed persons and the ageing of the workforce in the nursing occupation, too. To obtain the workability, it is important to assess the complexity of the assignments in relation to the competence of the nursing staff. However, up to now valid German-speaking instruments to measure competence in inpatient care are missing. The translation of the Nurse Competence Scale (Meretoja, Isoaho und Leino-Kilpi, 2004) occurred following the guidelines of the „International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcome Research” (ISPOR). Subsequent the translation was terminal modified in the course of a cognitive debriefing. A pretest was realized with 7 nurses of inpatient care at which different fields of work were included. The German version of the NCS (G-NCS) enables the standardized global representation of the occupational competences of nurses in inpatient care in the form of a self-report. Furthermore there is a comparison between the corresponding competences and their use within the actual employment, to screen the assignment in relation to the competences of the respondents. By the development of the G-NCS first perceptions respective to the standardized survey of competences within the field of inpatient care could be won. The examination of the quality criteria of this questionnaire is planned in following works.
